Notes for Reflection on God as a Potter
2 Corinthians 4:6-7
What might we learn about God…..about life …..if we came with Jeremiah to the potter’s house.
In the passage from Jeremiah this creating God is met by Jeremiah while watching a potter at work, hands on the clay, bending carefully over the pot being created. Jeremiah recognizes God as the potter, and the people as the clay. The potter finds that one attempt to create the pot is spoiled for some reason. But the potter is not finished with the clay. The potter throws it back into the soaking pit so that it can be remade again in the future.GOD WILLING TO LET GO AND BEGIN AGAIN:
Think about: your life Letting Go; Beginning again; letting God begin again with you to reform you in ways that are right for your.
PATIENCE: PREPARING CLAY/SOAKING/SIFTING/MIXING
Knowing when the clay is ready///when it is the RIGHT time. Think about: the role of patience and preparation in your life….the question of timing and knowing when something is the right time.
CENTERING: Gentle firm pressure and concentration…..
Think about: Centreing….Do you allow the Spirit to call you to centre or do you spin off in different directions….Does your life get off-centre; unbalanced.
KNOWING THE CLAY; THE POSSIBILITY INHERENT….THE LIMITATIONS
A kind of Partnership: INTERACTIVE: Dream /vision of Creator, but clay has mind of own as well.
THE BALANCE BETWEEN GOD’S DREAM AND INTENTION AND OUR OWN. Sometimes surprises. Not everything works out…cracks or warps. Think about: People in your life…the different kinds of clay; and possibility that is in each of them…..Think about the balance in your own life between God’s intention and your own…..Is there harmony? or are you doing all the directing of your life? Is there room to listen for what the Creator might want to realize through your life?
CLAY NEED A BALANCE OF PRESSURE FROM INSIDE AND FROM OUTSIDE. IF TOO MUCH OUTSIDE IT IMPLODES…IF TOO MUCH FROM THE INSIDE IT WILL RIP THE VESSEL.
Think about: Balance in your life; pressure in your life. Is it something that helps to create something new? Or puts you off centre?
ONCE A POT IS MADE IT NEEDS TO BE CAREFULLY DRIED. IT IS VERY FRAGILE AT THIS POINT. WAITING INCUBATING TIME.
Think about: Are there are times in your life for letting be, resting, waiting, when the work is going on internally–without much outward sign.
TRANSFORMATION: CLAY GOES FROM BEING IN THE EARTH, TO BEING PREPARED FOR WORKING; TO BEING A LUMP POTENTIAL; TO BEING FORMED. BUT NOT END: FIRING GIVES THE STRENGTH AND SETS THE FORM. IN FIRE THE CLAY BECOMES WHAT IT IS MEANT TO BE.
A SECOND TRANSFORMATION IS THE GLAZE FIRE, USUALLY AT A MUCH HIGHER TEMPERATURE: HAVING PROVEN STRONG ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND WITH INTEGRITY THE FIRST FIRING THE POT CAN BE GLAZED AND DECORATED SO THAT IT CAN BE AN OBJECTOF BEAUTY OR OF USE.
Think about: Fires of transformation in your life….testing times when your integrity and core strength were formed…strengthening times when you looked back and could see how much stronger you were for passing through some fire in your life. Think about transformation and how God is transforming you. Think about transformation and how God is transforming this congregation.
POTTER GOD WHO FORMS, REFORMS, TRANSFORMS.
